Darn, yesterday's Jurassic 5 concert at school was pretty sweet. The mini-intersession showcasing DJ Cut Chemist & DJ Nu Mark was wicked. Cut Chemist was doin' his thang like he did in Scratch, the turntablist documentary; his fingers were moving with franktic energy on the fader buttons, juggling between three turntables. Then he did a little stunt where he spinned with a turntable geared like a bass guitar. Nu Mark did a cute lil' cut of a 30's swing tune, mixing it up nice and slow with a wired up Fisher-Price toddlers' learning toy. =D

From the look of things, the J5 crew were pretty chilled, down-to-earth ppl. Felt a little bad for the crew cos as energetic as the music and the four MCs were, people didn't seem to move all that much. The downside of performing to a geek school, I guess: it's a bit like u^. *sigh*

CYW personal shopping services is proud to offer her mates Senior Ball dress shopping this week:

been raiding prom dress departments, hurling racks and racks of princessy dresses into dressing rooms in various malls across town this weekend, and fighting valiantly against every pre-pubescent high-schooler I encounter. It's the All-American experience, all right.

More senior ball frivolousness:
dress
shoes
Jewelry
accessories
tickets
date [male or female].........ARG.

the ultimate tear-jerker trailer:

from Together [MAb@_] - directed by Chen Kaige, of Farewell To My Concubine fame.
Maybe it's the triumphant music, [<= Beethoven? Pardon my ignorance] but I just couldn't help my tear ducts streaming away when I saw this.

quality sights and sounds doth a happy woman make:

accidentally delightful sloth-

Caught Matthew Herbert's Big Band Project performing live on Gilles Peterson's show when ditching class on Wednesday. The set included some Herbert classics and a few tracks from the forthcoming Good Bye Swingtime. Man, can't wait to get my hands on it =D

Hollywood, Hong Kong [䦳Ӳ] -

Directed by Fruit Chan [G], prolly the only indie director in Hong Kong and the man who brought us Made in Hong Kong [sy] and The Longest Summer [h~ϪSOh]
H,HK is gritty, it's low-brow, it's dark and farcical in the way that only Hong Kong can be. Fucking brilliant.

or is it dead woman walking?

Senior Ball dilemmas are making me sick to the stomach. everyone in my year has been really hyping it up since the tix went on sale.
My situation hasn't changed since the last time I whined, and is not likely to within the next two weeks [may 2nd being the big day]
been googleing around and the blatantly aweful truth is that EVERYONE goes. If I don't go => am social outkast. If I do go => who the hell am I going with?!
Wish I had the "Sod all ya sad American buggers" sassiness, but unfortunately shy wallflower would be a desciption closer to the truth.

To add insult to injury, when i asked my bro if he would accompany his eternally pitiful dateless sis, he gave me the dirtiest "no chance in hell even if you shoot me" look. Aaaarrrr! What are siblings any good for???

some not-old-not-new news from "high school":

Cheltenham Ladies are as brainy as they are snobbish ;p [link nicked from KK]
Mind you we do have a notorious history of producing top-notch alumi who hate the school .

follow up on Structural-Design-Hell:

after staying up til 7am.......we came last out of 8 teams! sucks.

all happy b4 load testing the Big Fat Spider
our less-than-elegant structure
the slow dance of death

it held only 27 lbs, as supposed to the 100 lbs target. Let's just say "Don't ask CY to build your house."

All is doom and gloom in the land of Structural-Design-Hell:

Load testing our team's balsa wood (aka disposable chopsticks) structure tomorrow today at 2pm. Point of design is that it's supposed to hold 100 lbs and fail at 300 lbs, be wider than 32" in diameter but not wider than 36", and higher than 12" but not higher than 20".

status report at 12:22am -
+ the not-yet-assembled arched trusses look crap
+ I have saw dust all over myself.
+ Limbs and back aching from working bent double on the studio floor.
+ Accumulated irritation from stupid mistakes made by partners and moi => off the charts.

time for chocolate, and virtual venting on blog.

Moore on War:

from the director of Bowling for Columbine:

"Take the Dixie Chicks. I'm sure you've all heard by now that, because their lead singer mentioned how she was ashamed that Bush was from her home state of Texas, their record sales have "plummeted" and country stations are boycotting their music. The truth is that their sales are NOT down.... Their song, "Travelin' Soldier" (a beautiful anti-war ballad) was the most requested song on the internet last week. They have not been hurt at all -- but that is not what the media would have you believe. Why is that? Because there is nothing more important now than to keep the voices of dissent -- and those who would dare to ask a question -- SILENT. And what better way than to try and take a few well-known entertainers down with a pack of lies so that the average Joe or Jane gets the message loud and clear: "Wow, if they would do that to the Dixie Chicks or Michael Moore, what would they do to little ol' me?" In other words, shut the f--- up.

And that, my friends, is the real point of this film that I just got an Oscar for -- how those in charge use FEAR to manipulate the public into doing whatever they are told."

Spent the whole day in doors due to crappy weather. Am under mild depression because of:
1. crap weather
2. the onslaught of work in the next few weeks
3. Leslie - been listening to his old classics [h, Lߺίv, , A鱡, Monica, Stand Up], the Salute album, and more recent stuff [j, k, Lf, and Crossover] . How can anyone with so much vitality and lust for life do this to themselves?
4. Been inhaling XSive amounts of solvents [or CFCs] from doing spray-painting animation assignment
5. Am still traumatised by gynecology visit & unresolved problems

Menstrual Dreamer [img from marichan]

Visits to any gynecologist, no matter how nice they try to be, suck. I hate the dread-prolonging wait, the undressing, the silly paper gowns, that torturing device of a chair, the thought of some stranger poking about in your private anatomy. The humiliation of it all! The thought of it alone is enough for me to want to trade for a wee-wee.

We spent 45 mins today watching Ali G does America in my oh-so-deep video art class.
I love the overpriced education I'm receiving.

~j Rest in Peace, Leslie (1956-2003)

I'm shocked into disbelief.
I've only been to three Sinopop concerts in all my life, and one of them is his. His songs were the soundtrack of my elementary school days.
For me, his unexpected passing signifies the end of an era, when Hong Kong was happy and booming, and when I was a carefree child.
